Three Major I-75 Projects Are Completed
Massive $150 Million Project Ran From Goddard Road To The Rouge River In Wayne County

Three major construction projects on Interstate 75 in Wayne County were completed in 2018. An approximately 4-½
mile, $150 million project from Goddard Road to the Rouge River in Allen Park, Southgate, Lincoln Park, Melvindale
and Detroit began in December 2016 and included concrete pavement and joint repairs, bridge approach, concrete
barrier replacement, attenuator replacement, tree removal, bridge rehabilitation on six structures, permanent lighting
and back wall replacement.
Additional work included filler wall work, structural steel repairs, removal of two structures, noise barriers,
construction of four structures, approximately ½-mile of road reconstruction, drainage improvements, freeway
lighting, noise wall construction, Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) work, installation of Dynamic Message Signs
(DMS), pavement markings and signing.
The prime contractor for the project was
C.A. Hull Co., Inc., of Walled Lake. A challenge on the project was dealing
with the conditions of the structural steel beams from the original construction and deciding what the best procedure
was to repair the deteriorated and damaged steel. The repairs were done with welding and bolts.
C.A. Hull modified its excavators with multiple attachments in order to remove concrete bridge decks without
damaging the bridge beams.
Subcontractors on the project included
Dan’s Excavating, Inc., of Shelby Township, Ajax Paving Industries, Inc., of
Troy and
Black Swamp Steel, Inc., of Holland, Ohio. The prime as-needed consultants for construction were HNTB
and Great Lakes Engineering Group, of Lansing.
Material quantities included 2,470 feet of less than 24-inch sewer removal; 11,995 feet of concrete barrier removal;
7,670 feet of fence removal; 3,087 feet of guardrail removal; 46,691 square yards of pavement removal; 5,485 cubic
yards of compacted-in-place embankment; 1,060 cubic yards of channel excavation; 78,409 cubic yards of earth
excavation and 3,562 cubic yards of non-hazardous contaminated material handling and disposal.
